  1. I credit Rick Wormelli with so much learning around building classroom routines, grading, and more. I liked listening to him...his passion is convincing. In particular, I appreciated how he explains the best kinds of formative feedback and of course how the feedback is the key. Descriptive feedback, as he explains, is a teaching tool. We describe the student's work as it relates to the goal of the task...no comparisons. What's looking right on target? What aspect of the task can the student improve?

I like this. A lot. I have adopted the idea of providing students with frequent and progress focused feedback...as much as I am able. Sometimes I can't find the time but I make a big effort. I schedule reading conferences at least every 3rd day. I aim to provide Writer's Notebook feedback weekly. Often times I'll visit students while they're writing and provide that descriptive feedback too. I want so much to do more of it. I think it's the secret to helping students succeed and love learning. It really motivates some of my reluctant ones.
